About Midlife Metamorphosis
I first heard the term “midlife crisis” when I was about 20. My father was applying it to my uncle who, at age 39, was leaving his wife and two grown children. It smacked of ‘irresponsible behaviour’, ‘lack of control’, even ‘folly’.
So I embarked upon my ‘adult life’ believing that, in fact, only ‘immature, selfish, irresponsible individuals’ had midlife crises. More than twenty years later, I want to re-frame us as ‘aware, authentic and brave’.
By chronicling the thoughts, feelings, acts and desires that constitute my own midlife crisis, and those of some of the fellow travellers I have met along this road of self-discovery, I hope to let you all know that
- you are not alone
- you are not losing your marbles
- you are not reprehensible
- this is the start of something new
